# Go back to where you were with Recent navigation

> Use the Back, Forward, and Recent navigation buttons on the top bar to return to records, selections, and views you have worked with.

The **Back**, **Forward**, and **Recent navigation** buttons are on the left side of the top bar. Use them to return to something you worked with earlier. This is useful when you move between companies, contacts, sales, projects, requests, selections, and the Diary.

Recent navigation lists all of these in one place. The [history list][1] is different: it shows records of one type, for example only companies, where you choose a company.

<h2 id="go-back">
  Go back to a place you visited
</h2>

1. Click the clock icon (<i class="ph ph-clock" aria-label="Recent navigation" />) on the top bar.

2. In the **Recent** list, choose the place you want to return to. The most recent place is at the top, and a dot marks where you are now.

You return to the same tab. The side panel and the list or board view are as you left them.

Each place appears only once. If you visit a company again, it moves to the top of the list. It is not added twice.

<h2 id="back-forward">
  Step back and forward
</h2>

* Click <i class="ph ph-caret-circle-left" aria-label="Back" /> (**Back**) to go to the previous place you visited.

* Click <i class="ph ph-caret-circle-right" aria-label="Forward" /> (**Forward**) to go to the next place.

The **Back** and **Forward** buttons in your browser work the same way.

<Note>
  **Back** and **Forward** move between places, for example from a company to a sale. They do not move between the tabs of the same record.
</Note>

<h2 id="list-size">
  Change the number of places in the list
</h2>

By default, the list keeps your 20 most recent places.

1. Click <i class="ph ph-user-circle" aria-hidden="true" /> **Personal settings** > **Preferences**.

2. Select **Functions**.

3. In the **Recent navigation list size** field, enter the number of places to keep, up to 50.

4. Click **Save**.

<Note>
  This setting is separate from **Size of history list** under **Visual effects**, which controls the [history list][1] only.
